GETTING BIGGER: DIETARY SUPPLEMENT ADVICE FOR TEENS

Chances are you know a teenage boy or two who would like to increase the size of his muscles.  While an effective exercise program matched with adequate nutrition will allow them to accomplish this goal, many respond to the lure of dietary supplements marketed as leading to extraordinary results.  The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Sports Medicine advise against the use of muscle-building products in teens, concerned about possible health risks and inadequate oversight in production.   So what happens when teens ask retailers for advice?  Are they educated about the stance taken by physicians and sports medicine specialists, or are they encouraged to purchase these products?  A recent study attempted to answer this question.

Researchers contacted 244 retail stores selling dietary supplements by phone, posing as a 15 year old football player.  The salesperson was asked whether they would recommend any products to enhance their strength-training program.  Over 2/3 recommended creatine (67.2%) while 30% advised against it and 5% would not make a recommendation over the phone.  In addition, 9.8% recommended a so-called testosterone booster, although 88% advised their teen client against this product.  When asked, most salespersons correctly noted that despite the statement on the label advising that these products are not recommended for those under 18 years of age, they are legally allowed to purchase them.

The researchers expressed concern that recommendations from sales staff often run counter to expert medical opinion and product labelling.  How concerned are you?  In addition to potential health risks, parents and teens should keep in mind that the most effective strategies for muscle gain are a well-designed strength training and nutrition program.
